Food For Thought Friday – 5/10/13 MLK Jr.

May 10, 2013

“I am very much afraid that today’s Christian church will lose its authenticity, forfeit the loyalty of millions, and we will see the Christian church dismissed as a social club with no meaning or effectiveness for our time, as a form without substance, as salt without savor. The real tragedy, though, is not Martin Luther King’s disillusionment with the church—for I am sustained by its spiritual blessings as a minister of the gospel with a lifelong commitment: The tragedy is that in my travels, I meet young people of all races whose disenchantment with the church has soured into outright disgust.”

– Martin Luther King Jr.

It’s one of those days where the illusions we’ve all formed are really weighing on me. It seems like we miss the point of life, friendship, love, God, and religion. Everyone seems to be pretending, or ignoring. Talking and not acting.

So, maybe instead of trying so hard to save the whole world, we should try harder to save our own neighbors.

Maybe we should be focusing more on the substance and not the form, the savor and not the salt.

Maybe we should quit letting others dictate what’s good for us.

Maybe we should all stop being so goddamn selfish all the time.
