Obsessiveness and Positivity.

September 7, 2011

Obsessiveness.

This is a word that many people would consider negative. Like many, many other things in life however, I believe that it is only bad if you choose it to be so.

I have become obsessive about creativity the past few weeks. Not just addicted.

Obsessive.

I want to, at all times, be listening to music or playing music.

I want to, at all times, be writing something.

I want to, at all times, be thinking about something that I want to write.

I have reached a stage in my life where I am excited. I am excited about where I am at and where I am going in life.

My life is a confusing, unorganized, and mysterious mess. But I prefer it that way. I find peace in that. Because I trust in something bigger than myself.

I have learned to embrace the awkward, the confusing, the unknown, and the different.

There is beauty in differences.

I have learned to embrace my fears.

And challenge them head on.

I’m learning to gravitate toward negative capability, but veer away from negativity. (If you don’t know what negative capability is, I have a blog about it. you can find it here: https://mountbrendon.wordpress.com/2011/03/30/negative-capability/ )

This is a somewhat difficult concept to understand and it’s taken me all three years of college to do so, but I think it is an important thing to understand.

Our culture may be extremely screwed up. Full of seemingly insolvable problems, and difficulties, and struggle; many of which we choose to ignore.

But our culture is also filled with good. With light. Each and every one of us carries this light. It may be hidden deep, but it is certainly there.

Last night, a couple friends and I spent a good half hour gaping over, criticizing, and talking negatively toward a certain Christian University in Florida and its absolutely ridiculous set of rules.

At least we think they’re ridiculous.

But we live hundreds of miles away.

It is certainly different and would certainly be miserable for me to attend such an establishment.

But maybe some people wouldn’t be miserable there. Maybe some people need such over-the-top structure. Maybe some people actually enjoy it there.

That is what I am learning. We, as people spend so much time talking negatively toward other people that often times we don’t know how to sit and talk positively. About much of anything.

So, from this point on, I am challenging myself to refrain from speaking negatively about anyone. Present or non-present; friend, acquaintance, or stranger.

I’m just going to try it out. And see what happens.

People often say that they just need to vent sometimes. This may be true.

But it may not.

What if we just need to vent because we’re trained to focus on the negative in life?

What if complaining is a cultural phenomenon.

There is no way of knowing unless we try to train ourselves and our minds, to focus on positivity.

Besides, what bad can come of a more positive outlook on life?

How could our society not improve everyone tried a little harder to do so?

Try it. Embrace it. Love it.

I lived for years with this negativity, this depressing view that the world is soaked in evil and that there is really nothin I can do, and i didnt want to do anything anyway. It clouded my time in high school, it carried into my freshman year of college.

It was a state of depression, really.

I have come out of this, but not without practice. it takes legitimate practice in love to get better at not judging, not getting annoyed, not hating. I think that this is a good excercise that needs to be implemented, lets see whatshappens.

As far as venting….it is an interesting subject. I think if humans were more honest with eachother, if we were less vieled in our emotions, we would not need this dumping of thoughts and feelings. Do you notice than when people vent to you they kinda feel bad for doing so, but at the same time it feels so great when theyre done.

    Thats what honesty does.

You feel bad because you were not completlyhonest with the person that you had a conflict or interaction with. You feel great afterward because you were finally honesy. Being honest is cathardic. So, why dont we just skip a step and be honest with people immeadiatly.

    kinda went off on that.

    good stuff, bdo.

I really like the connection with honesty you made here. Really insightful. I am in full agreement. If we were just more honest with each other (and ourselves) face to face, then this wouldn’t be as big of a problem.

Also, I thought of this after submitting the post. Maybe, if we just focused on the positivities of our culture, rather than the shortcomings, the latter would make its way up to the forefront of our focus and therefore slowly begin to overpower the shortcomings. I think that this could work if only all several million people (or even a large portion of us) bought into it.

Negativity just brings you down. I see no good in it. A positive outlook has nothing but rewards! I think everyone should be more aware of this. Enjoyed your thoughts on this.
